Västmanland County Council has banned smoking for patients about to undergo surgery. The ban applies to four weeks before and four weeks after surgery, according to Sveriges Radio P4 Västmanland.
- Scientifically, it has been shown in large studies that risks are roughly doubled if you smoke. Examples include wound healing problems and heart disease, says Magnus Lagerby, operations manager at the orthopedic clinic, to Sveriges Radio P4 Västmanland.
Orthopaedic Clinic has previously had a requirement that patients must have rökuppehåll with major surgery. It has happened to patients who have had such an agreement with their doctor and then not followed it sent home without a planned surgery performed. However, most patients who smoke have an understanding of the new rules and want to improve their odds when they have to undergo surgery, according to Magnus Lagerby.
