A new vaccine against dengue fever have shown promise, according to the researchers behind a new study.
In the current situation there is no vaccine against dengue, a flu-like illness with fever. In light of the results from the new study, to be regarded as positive: vaccine candidate said to provide 56 percent protection against the disease.
Vaccination trial is a double blind, randomized trefasstudie with CYD TDV. Over 10 000 children aged 2-14 years, in five Asian countries with a high incidence of dengue, were included in the study. Of them received two thirds vaccine on three occasions. The remaining third were given placebo. The follow-up was two years.
After more than 28 days had 117 cases of dengue fever occurred in the vaccinated group and 133 in the placebo group.
The vaccine was also shown to provide nearly 90 percent protection against serious diseases such as hemorrhagic dengue, characterized by internal bleeding and put a half million people are hospitalized annually, according to a news release from The Lancet.
Dengue fever is spread by mosquitoes and affects up to about 100 million people annually. It is found mostly in tropical areas of Asia and Latin America, but in recent years have also occurred in Europe.
